Boat Trailer registration

So I go to sell my boat on FB marketplace and get an overwhelming response. I’m quite surprised at how many are interested. I choose the first responder who promises to be here the next afternoon with cash. I hold the boat and trailer for him, as promised. He showed up as promised, but we can’t find a serial number on the trailer for the bill of sale. He gets a little frustrated, and I try to tell him that I’ve owned the boat some 8 years now, and have had it registered 7 times with no serial number without any problem. He says Pike county will NOT give him a tag without a serial numbered bill of sale for the trailer. I take my screwdriver and peel the paint off the tongue of the trailer, and there above the manufacturers information, are four LARGE digits that sat 4977. I tell him that THAT will work as the serial number, but he disagrees, saying it should be at least 16 digits. I go an extra step and actually call my local Sheriffs office that proceeds to inform me that I,would have to take the trailer to an inspection station to have it inspected, the fabricate a data plate to fasten to the trailer.
I’m going one more step this morning, and calling the Sheriff out her for a “serial number” verification. He will have a form that I will fill out, then he will sign as a serialized trailer. I should jack the price up!

I was on the buying end of a similar deal. Buddy of mine gave me a really old boat and trailer that he restored but no longer used. Old fiberglass boat built in the 60's and the original trailer. Had to go through the same process of having an officer come over to inspect. Pretty quick though.

How did the trailer get registered without serial numbers? They should be on your tag paperwork.

It has been years but when I moved to Louisiana you had to get the Sheriff to verify the vin number on a car to tag it. No big deal other than meeting up with the deputy to sign off on the title.

I had this happen once. Went to the tag office to register a trailer w/o a serial #. They told me to go to the sheriff to be inspected. Did so and he called the tag office back after inspecting and they issued a serial # that had to be riveted to the frame.

The tag office gave me the serial number on the trailer registration, it was EXACTLY the same as the boats hull number! I told her that particular number was riveted to the back bulkhead of the boat, and She said that She didn’t know what to tell me….So I bought a stamp set and fabricated a plate with that number on it and riveted it to the trailer. Then changed my mind about selling it after all that!
I have had the boat in Lake Seed, but still want to explore Lake Chatuge and maybe others around my home…

Id call the next feller in line...somebody will buy your boat....
If all else fails, go to the tag office and tag it as home made.

Takes about 5 minutes to give them the info they need to tag it. It's cheaper than most store bought trailers as there is on fee across the board, no matter the size of the trailer.

You can always register it in AL and you don't have to have a trailer tag. I lived in GA for almost forty years and always registered my boats in AL, as I fish the Chattahoochee mostly. I have never had to buy a trailer tag or register the trailer.

Did this with my used kayak trailer. Deputy dropped by the house one evening, looked the trailer over. Gave me a form they accepted to the register the trailer at the DMV. Really wasn’t a big deal, a little inconvenience.

Must be a Ga thing don't have to have a SN on a boat trailer or any tailer in Fl. Only a registration for it. In the big city I work in the tag office won't do a homemade trailer registration but the little country town down the road will. Just need a weight slip.

In cobb county they didn't check anything. I just filled out a homemade trailer affidavit and the lady at the tag office gave me a serial number plate and tag.
