the answer is that a gut shot deer will not survive. i bet no one has shot or photographed a live deer over 24 hours after it was paunch shot (gun or bow). usually will bed up 200 yards or less & die in bed at approximately 5 hours after the shot if not pushed. i have tracked & found a large buck that was paunch shot & still alive after 18 hrs. but he was weak enough that the dog brought him down easily. that was an unusual case. give the deer 6 hrs. after the shot & go in and find it within 250 yrds. we did track & find a liver, one lung and paunch shot buck yesterday, that travelled almost 600 yrds. with no blood after 50 yrds. & never bedded. very unusual...there are many variables.
