283 small block, 327 small block, 400 big block
Ford 300 six cylinder
Chrysler slant 6 or a 318.

283 probably the best on fuel economy vs HP. I love a 350 with a 4 bolt main….but you gotta turn em off at the gas pump to get the tank full.

my boat motor??

Never had a vehicle with the motors y'all are mentioning but I know of them. Have a good friend that is a big muscle car builder with the smaller motors getting lots of HP out of them.

327 and 454. I ran a 327 with double hump heads, 12.5/1 pistons and Pete Jackson gear drive hooked to a 3500 B&m converter turbo 400 on the street. Had to mix with plane gas from Charlie Brown airport to get it to run right lol Amoco white gas was my friend

The one that ran 16 years and 300,000 miles in my first Nissan truck that never left me walking, and still had all the original parts on it when I sold it, except for an oxygen sensor and a valve cover gasket.

As far as classic engines, I'd go with either a 351 Cleveland or a Ford 300 straight six. Maybe that old 283. It got more performance out of that little engine than most bigger ones.

340. Couldn't tear it up even when bouncing off the rev limiter.
I can testify, here's my '71 340 balanced crank, stock rods and pistons, Direct Connection 284/484 Purple Shaft cam, Hedman Super Pro Husler Headers with slide on collectors, Weiand Single plane intake, Holley 750 single line. No rev limiter except the one in my head.

What's your all-time favorite engine?
Mine is a 327 Chevy...that tells you I'm old school.?
I'd go with Cheby' 396 or 427 in a Street Rod.

The Cheby' 350 with a 4 bolt main bearing cap was a good engine.

My favorite old skool 6 banger is the Cheby' Straight 250

A Dodge 318 is the longest lasting, least maintenance engine of any make I have ever owned.FB_IMG_1648501249446.jpg
It was 20 years old and about 400k when my Uncle lost it in a fire for me. Still running like a sewing machine. Squirrels and Chipmunks chewed into the gas line while I was in the hospital.
