My 5th summer garden: Expansion and more beans

My concern with broadcasting was somebody told me if it gets into the corn it would kill it. Not on the leaves but into the center of the stalk? Did that ever happen for you?
no, we have never had an issue with it killing any corn. It will burn a spot on the leaves, but it doesn't seem to harm it other than that spot

they made factory side dresser for the Farmall Super A, and I think Cubs too. They were chain driven, turning a disc in the bottom of the hopper, and pushed the fertilizer out into a tube that directed the fertilizer down close to the roots of the plant.

HAd a feller tell me sumpin once before I got fat.....he said "wanna find the easiest way to do something, get a fat guy to do it." Now that I am a fat dude, I can say he was 100% correct. Im'a try avoiding the hands and feet method and see if I can use the machines.
My philosophy is similar: People say that necessity is the mother of invention. I say that it's actually laziness instead of necessity. :)

Manure is in the plans for subsequent years. I gotta start collecting it and composting it first, correct? This winter I am gonna let my cows, donkeys, and goats all graze on the cover crop and let them do their bidness all over the field, I reckon that will help a bunch for future planting.

Yeah it works better if you let it rest for like six months. I know you got a long term plan! I was just throwing that out there.

Yalls gardens look great. Ours is about the worst it’s been since I’ve moved here. Seems like germination has been spotty on everything this year. I’ve planted sweet corn twice and probably couldn’t make a full row if you added both plantings together. Last year we had an issue with some bad seed causing issues, but this time I’ve tried two varieties from two different suppliers. Beans, butter beans, and peas were all less than exceptional, but did ok. Bush beans are blooming now so we should be a couple weeks out from some good eats. Squash is starting to put on. Nothing else is really close just yet

Im in the waitin' stage for all the skips I replanted this past weekend. I'll be all kinda bummed if at least some of that don't come up. The red beans will have a ton of skips cause I didn't have the right seed plate. I will end up re-planting most of that I reckon.

I got the skips replanted just ahead of this rain last night. I had to replant my cantaloupes because they got washed away, and Dinky helped me plant a couple rows of okry just above the green beans. Then we planted 4 rows of heritage corn, about 70 to 80 feet long. I still have enough seed to replant IF something happens to this planting. I am hoping the rain today really sets it to growing. I am planting all my other corn about 3/4 of a mile away hoping to keep this strain pure and keep the majority of this planting for seed next year.

My 'maters are coming on strong, and starting to bloom. Peppers are doing well too. My squash and cukes are out of the plastic mulch about 2 inches, and dark green and growing.

Over the weekend, we put down some wood mulch between the plastic mulch to help keep down weeds and such. This fall, I will plow it all under to help with the organic material in our garden. I am sure I will have to add some lime and nitrogen because of the heavy application of wood chips.

This is my first time using plastic mulch, and the dog keeps wanting to poke holes thru it. I hope it is a passing thing with him. Those blue heelers are a handful when they are pups. 1715692101455.jpeg20240513_191220.jpg20240513_191217.jpg

Here’s a pic of squash, beans, butter beans, and peas to the far right. Tomatoes are starting to put on and peppers are flowering. I put wood chips down around all the nightshades to try to prevent whatever disease hS killed them the last few years. It’s already taking out tater plants so hopefully the mulch will help the others. Need to figure out how I’m going to/want to support them this year. Probably be California weave, but I’ve never been a huge fan of it from last few years of experience. I always have plants grow at different speeds and it gets to be a headache for me. Cucumbers are about to start flowering.

the wood chips were great, other than we had more squash bugs living there and it took almost 3 years to break down. We used Cypress

this is mostly poplar and pine. A few sweet gums thrown in for good measure. They were clearing the powerline right of way, and I got them to dump a few loads next to my garden.

Finally got some maters n cukes in the ground yesterday. Hoping this is my year to crack the code on maters.

In the holes I dug for maters I put a little lime and a little epsom salt. Do yall do anything like that for cucumbers?

I put garden lime (powder) and bonemeal mixed in my holes. But make sure the critters can’t dig it up trying to get the bonemeal. I’ve replanted mine 2 or 3 times due to the resident fox.
I’ll mix the Epsom salt with water and water it in instead of sprinkling it on the soil if it needs it
