I know the question is old, but in the early 80s in boyscouts we used White pine and hickory.

Dunno if that is the answer you were looking for.


Now days i cheat I do no go o he woods wih ou my magnesium sick.

Hickories have compound leaves. Some varieties have five leaflets and others have seven or nine. The variation is with different species of Hickory, and not within the same species.

As far as I know there is no variation within White Pine foliage.

Was answering his firemaking question i hope.

Always had some fat lighter around too and scraping a knife on bluejeans will get some nice dry lint to kindle a fire too if the jeans are dry.

i have seen the same tree produce red and white oak acorns.actually it was two trees that grew into one very early in its life and you couldnt tell it was two.but it did produce both both acorns and i do have a witness.thats as close as i can get being from the southern part of the state.
