Get him/her on their own policy for the vehicle they will be driving. We did that for our son and saved big bucks.

in 2011 when i added my 16yo son my agent switched around the cars on my policy changing the primary to lesser priced vehicle, that lowered it some...i had 3 at the time...

I bought my son a 2003 Honda Accord w/ 115k miles about a year ago as his first car. Paid $6k for it from a mechanic/dealer that specializes in Honda's. It was literally the best deal I found, similar cars at a car lot were all much more.

My insurance with State Farm went from about $220 per month (including mine and wife's car insurance, house, a life insurance policy on me) to $550 with adding a teen driver. It's highway robbery. I looked into other options, nothing else was better at the time. I need to go back and see if him now being a full time / on campus student makes any difference in rates though, plus maybe a year of clean driving record?
