Did you reload anything today #4

Today’s project is done. .38 Spl cases sized, belled and primed.

450 sorted by head stamp, 150 assorted, and 38 nickel plated. That’s all the nickel that I had. My friend that I load with will prep another 12 to complete the box.

About half will get 158gr soft lead hollow points over 3.1 of W231 for defensive rounds in snub nosed airweight Smiths. The rest will get our standard target load of a 158gr plated semi-wadcutter over 4.2gr of W231. View attachment 1307525View attachment 1307526

Looks great.

I need to get some .38spcl loads made for practice with my Airweight J-frame. I have some coated 158gr lead projos and could pinch off some W231 away from my .45acp futures. :bounce:

That should cover the entire load range. Is it really a crimp grove? I have noticed they have a deeper grove to reduce friction followed by shallower groves depending on caliber where Barnes are all the same depth
I think it is actually where the base separates from the petals after impact now that you mention it.

W231 is my favorite for .38 Spl. The 3.1gr loads are for some older Model 12’s.

I'd like to get settled in on a load that works well in my J-Frame as well as the other .357's......and just deal with the cleanup of carbon rings in the cylinders when I'm ready to carry them with .357 loads.

I've never loaded .38 spcl.
I'll give W231 a try.

Have you ever used Titegroup for .38spcl ?

No, I haven’t. I’ve used W231, W244, Power Pistol, CFE-P, and 700X.

Bullseye and 231/hp38 for target loads. Power Pistol for full power loads.

Buddy is suppose to pick up his 30cal suppressor today and plans to come down for a visit. I loaded up some 300 BLK subs so we can try it out on my CVA single shot. Guessing I will have to have one once I hear how quiet it is.

I loaded 20 using my own cast 228 powder coated boolit over CFE BLK. They were clocking at1075 when I chronographed them thru the CVA 16.25".

What powder did you use? I load 30-06 150 Accubonds over Big Game out of desperation in a Savage with “savage” results. I couldn’t get 4064, 4895, or 4350 to shoot them straight in that gun.
I have not used accubonds but have used Big Game with decent results in 150s. In the 150-165 weights it is rare to see an 06 not shoot well with 4064 those other two are generally very good as well. You definitely see some picky ones on occasion.

Did up some .243s, project deer food continues. 100gr partitions over a Charge of Hybrid 100v. Never loaded partitions in the .243 but the gun likes em a lot. Still waiting on my HHTs for the .7/08 that might be the next project.

Prepped some Starline 6.5 Grendel brass a few weeks back.

This afternoon I loaded 40.
CCI #41
Hornady 123gr SST over TAC.

Loaded them short enough to feed in magazines...but sure would have liked to have loaded them longer.

Planning to shoot them Thursday.

Had a ton of superformance powder, I bought on a whim years ago. So I went through some old factory boxes getting shot brass. Was an able to do a mixed batch of 150gr TTSX this was more of a test to see how the powder does in my old Abolt. But 45, 300wsms knocked out using some federal cases and some Hornady cases.

It was nice and warm yesterday evening, so I repasted and reshot the 2 best Lehigh loads from last week for group size and pressure signs. There was a clear winner, although both appeared to be good pressure wise. A scope adjustment from Superformance or Federal blue box isn’t even necessary.

Took my .41 mag expander die to the machine shop and got it shortened so I can use it on .41 special brass now. Tried it on about 50 cases last night. Worked like a champ.
Thanks for saying something about the caliber. I knew of the 41 Mag, but have never seen 41 special. That would make a great K Frame.

Loaded up a little Garand food with Speer hot-cor 165's and Hornady Interlock SPBT 165's.

Also loaded up some Speer 180's for the sporterized 303 British, along with a few 150 gr Interlocks to try for the first time... I'd like to kill a deer with this old rifle, and the 150's are sounding like the better choice.
20240527_145526.jpg

All of the above are charged with VV N140, because IMR4064 is too expensive to feed a Garand with, and in these uncertain times, it never hurts to have a spare recipe... N140 seems to work fine with the Garand, but while I've got it, I might as well try it with my other rifles... I've also had promising results so far with N140 in the 35 Whelen. It's not quite the optimal powder for 150's out of the .303, but it will get the job done with the soft Interlocks and within the ranges I see.

Also resized & primed 100 pieces of 44 Mag brass in preparation for an upcoming range day.

Smith already had the model 69 which is an L frame in 44 mag. I have one. It would be perfect in .41 mag/spl.
I picked up one of those this year and love it. Never thought about it in 41 Magnum, but that would seem like a perfect match.

Did some Hammer 118gr HHTs, in a 7-08. Used a healthy dose of BLC-(2). This rifle loves a 120gr TTSX and a book maxed charge of BLC-(2). So I made a Hammer version of that load. Didn’t get any pictures but project Deer food Is still rolling. I’ve prepped .280 and .243 brass for the next phase those will be a 154gr SST for my dad and a 80gr discontinued Speer soft point pre hotcore for my buddies dad. I’m almost caught up to start fishing.

Didn't get to range today.....still shaking off anesthesia hangover from yesterday and gratefully resumed the miraculous arthritis meds.

Did spend a few minutes on the bench late this afternoon.......sort of a therapy session.

Quiet time being focused on something that is finite, empirical and logical......as opposed the wacko chaotic stuff that is going on in our country.

Sized & primed 50 Starline SRP 6.5 NeedsMoore cases that had already been cleaned, annealed, trimmed, deburred & chamfered.

Will be charged with IMR4350 with charges from 37.8gr-->41.4gr in 0.4gr increments pushing 140gr ELD-M missiles.

I've checked my chamber in the rifle these are intended for.....this approximates what they'll look like seated with .030" jump.

May get to charging & seating bullets later this evening......or tomorrow morning with coffee.
