Implement Weights

Anybody got a source or an idea for implement weights? My subsoiler couldn't cut the dirt this weekend because it was so hard.

Whens the last time it rained down there? Maybe ya just gotta wait for the oven to cool off a bit?

Unless your subsoiler has a rack to accommodate standard suitcase weights you may have to get a welding shop to improvise.
Any farm equipment shop or welding shop is sure to have all sorts of surplus metals you can add.

It's a Taylor-Pittsburgh subsoiler. I thought about standard suitcase weights but I don't know if they will fit on the angle iron cross member or not.

I may have my maintenance guy fabricate me something. I was just hoping there is such an off the shelf thing.

It was a couple of weeks ago. I wanted to turn dirt last weekend while it was still damp but I had too many weed to suit me so I nuked everything with Roundup. This heat last week has cooked everything.

Well then if you just gotta do it now there is always the poor mans weight. Big log and a ratchet strap!

While I was sitting there yesterday burning diesel and bouncing my subsoiler over the hard pan I was trying to think what I have that's heavy enough and small enough that I could strap to it and I came up empty.

I may gamble on a couple of suitcase weights. I can always use them when I have my mower hooked up.

...just joking, seriously.
One ingenious thing I've seen with my tractor man is that he has a length of railroad rail, the width of his tooth plow sitting on top.
It has two feet of chain welded near each end and hooks welded on top of the plow as well. Two people can drop it off the back of the plowand put the chains in the hooks and it makes a perfect drag.
Two people put it back up there wrapped the chains into the hooks and... weight.

We made a concrete weight with rebar handles for some of our implements for the hard Talbot County red clay.
Ended up with a 300 lb. permanent weight on the 6 ft Harrow to make them dig.

I believe that it might be easier to plow a paved driveway than this red clay after the weather we have had this past week

Yep. I got the concrete on the driveway to turn. I just left scrape marks on the clay. :bounce:

I ratchet strapped a few concrete blocks down on top of my disks. But it’s looking like you might get some rain in the next few days … hopefully

Do you know Sammy Brazeal? He's my tractor mechanic. Imma give him a call and see what he can come up with.

Make you up a frame to hold a fifty five gallon drum in place on your harrow. Install a three quarter inch ball valve in threaded hole in barrel head. Turn the valve down to the bottom of the drum laying horizontally. Above the 3/4 inch hole is a two inch bung hole with a threaded bung screwed in. When you need weight put water in two inch opening, when you don’t need weight, drain the water out. Water weighs 8.34 lbs/gallon. Full drum is about 458 lbs.
