If you where going to start up a small / part time business that would be out of your home what would be the steps you would take to get it started correctly?

A lot depends on what it is, how much liability you might face, etc. You can incorporate pretty inexpensively. You need some sort of good bookkeeping system. You need a bank account set up for the business and some operating capital, again how much depends on what it is. And you need to be willing to work hard to get it going! And there is probably more others can bring to the table on this, but what I have said is just as a bare minimum for start up... :)

Talk to a CPA.

  • They can help you decide the entity structure you want to be.
  • They can help you make payroll decisions.
  • They can help you find an attorney to incorporate you or form an LLC if deemed necessary.
  • They can help you set up your bookkeeping system so that you will have all information necessary to apply for bank loans or prepare a tax return.
  • They can help you with finding a bank or SBA lender.
  • They can help you determine where you need to apply for a business license.
  • ETC.....
