I wish people would leave all snakes alone. Once we push certain species to the point of near extinction we’ll be left with a gap in the big scheme of things. Everyone is worked up about coyotes now that their filling the gap we created by eliminating the red wolfs. Who knows what type of invasive species
would fill the snake gap.
Hopefully not bushmasters!

Watch out for puddles in the roads too. Several years ago I was walking out of a low swampy area. There was a normal sized puddle on the left side of the woods road. I was headed back to my truck for the day and headed towards the puddle to wash the bottom and sides of my boots off. Just as I got a couple feet away, a massive cottonmouth exploded out of the puddle and slithered away from me. As I thought about this situation, it hit me that I was seeing an above average amount of frogs in the area. That snake was completely submerged and I'm betting was enjoying a healthy meal of frog legs !!! Lesson learned.

Make that 6 now (canebrakes) as of yesterday right after dark crossing field road path. Never rattled, out of the 6 since March this year only 1 out of 6 rattled.

Just about all of the canebrakes I fool with take a lot of prodding to get riled up. Diamondbacks are another story, and pygmies, all I have to do is glare at them.

A few years back I was hunting a stand at my house. Kept hearing something that I assumed was a cicada. Ended up sitting a nice buck right before dark and jumped down to try to get the blood trail before I lost light. I caught the trail and then backed up a few feet to see the line. Caught this guy sitting silent where I had just walked by. I was less than a foot from him and he never made a sound. Given that he was less than 100yds from my house, he didn't get a pass.

I've seen 3 timbers in my yard this year and ran over one with the tractor about a week ago(didn't see it until it was too late). My lab got bit on the neck by one and had another laying in the flower bed next to the back steps. Until this year I had only seen 3 total in 10 years of owning the property.
Did your dog make it?
