Economical Run & Gun Rifle Build

Ran by the range to ladder test some Hornady ELDX’s 143 and Nosler 140’s further.

Temperatures were 92-97F with humidity in the mid 73-77% budding the time of shooting. Keeping the barrel from burning up became a chore. I also wasn’t shooting very well at all today unfortunately. It took a while for me to get in “the groove”.

The initial group (top target) was low and right from adjusting the scope at the house.

Targets:

Top: Nosler 140’s going from Left to Right : 40.0 ; 40.3 ; 40.5gr
Bottom: ELDX 143: 39.0 ; 39.5 ; 40.0 ; 40.5 ; 41.0gr

The 2nd group (Nosler 140gr at 40.3gr) produced right at a 1” 5 shot group.
I unfortunately let the barrel heat up too much and that 40.5 group blew up.

For the ELDX’s after the 39.0gr group I decided to wait 5-6 minutes between shots and noticed the groups tighten up immediately.
Groups 5-7 with the charge weights 39.5, 40.0 to 40.5 all produced 1” to 1.17” groups respectively.

Unfortunately group 8 at 41.0gr a thunderstorm rolled in for shots 3-5 so I shot them in quick secession which probably opened that group up more than if I had waited.

Overall the gun shoots better than I ever will. The Nosler 140’s at 40.3 grains and the ELDX’s at 39.5 to 40.5 grains all seem to be very solid choices.

I’ll wait for cooler temperatures to dial in the ELDX load, but I’m confident in the Noslers now.

I do not, need to invest in a chronograph

Great tools. (y)

Man, you did good to handle the heat today. I know that made it more tedious.....heat and weather rolling in.

I'd say you had a very productive session. Walked away with a load that'll work nicely. (y)(y)(y)

No wondering about unsafe temp sensitivity spikes....almost 100 degree ambient proved that.

knowing that could make your choices easier. The best ES & SD may not get you the best groups but it could be something you could tune with seating depth.

One of the cool things about that rifle is he has nothing restricting him from reaching whatever jam/jump he wants to play with.
No mag length troubles, no bottom metal overhangs above the mag to worry with.....just a straight path to battery.

Gotta love it.

Check your books but 41.5 H4350 is the charge for 6.5CM and 143 ELDX. I’d push it a little more.

Below is a shot from a zero check off a porch rail with my T3X lite, load info on target. I was banging steel plates from 200-500 yds with that load about a week ago (like 5x mixed brass to boot).

Looks like a sweet setup - I’ve got one in 45-70 for thumping on my mountain property.

That’s a beautiful group there.
I believe VihtVouri’s max charge for this projectile was somewhere around 41.7 grains if memory serves me right.
I believe Viht N555 is a slightly hotter charge than H4350 , but I could be wrong. The charges for N555 seem always less than 4350.

I’ll play with it some more when the weather cools off.

Thanks - those Tikkas sure do shoot. I’ll double check my notes but pretty sure it’s running around 2700 fps. They say a slow hit is better than a fast miss ;-)

What height DNZ rings did you put on it and any issues cocking the hammer back from the scope being close?

Get a can for that Blackout and run subs through it. Smiles to follow.
Both my 6.5cm and 300blk Scouts are threaded and take down.

I will have a can one day.

I’m tempted to chop the barrel down to 16.5” and put a can on it. I just don’t want to lose that much muzzle velocity
My 6.5 is a 24" bbl, would be ridiculous with a can. The 300 is a 16.5.
