Lanier - August Afternoon Beatdown!

So the other day, I get a call from George - "I just got blanked on Hartwell and I'm tired of seeing the fish being caught on Lanier". George wanted to work on sonar, drop shot, and spybaiting.

We met up at Vans Tavern and got started around 1pm. The first hour was nothing but setting up and tweaking his Humminbirds...then we started doing some fishing around 2pm. Keep in mind that we were in George's Triton and had to hunt brush piles...so that took a ton of time out of fishing.

Spybait then drop shot was the game plan. After a quick lesson on the basics of spybait fishing, George sees some fish moving on top...casts the spybait...and makes one crank of the handle and gets hammered....a few minutes later, a solid 14" keeper comes in the boat.

Wind started blowing hard....and we boated another couple on the spybait, but I kept seeing fish deep in the bright sun. So, we picked up the drop shot, and after a quick tutorial on dropping, went to work in the wind. I did notice that the fish were on the front side of brush...on the wind side.

Ended the day with 18....those that have been in the boat know the goals....1 then 5 then 10.....so we were working our tails off to get 20 on an August afternoon. During that time - we boated some good ones deep in 28'-32' of water....shallower or deeper, nothing. George got us started on the bigger fish off a hump and boated a solid 3#+ fish.

Fruity Worms Ruled in the Purple Shad and Candy....with my biggest fish (3#+ too) coming off Obsession 2. It's funny - George said he met me a few years ago at Vans Tavern and finally got in the boat together today. Great fun...lots of laughs...and a good stringer for August. LJ
