Aero Precision AR10, first impressions

Thought I’d share... started picking up parts 3 years ago. After 2020 it was nearly impossible to get other parts. Finally an upper became available this past August. Spendy but I grabbed it - a stainless 22” barrel in 6.5CM.

After grabbing a BCG and charging handle, I slapped it all together. This build was pretty comparable to AR15 builds and intuitive.

I had a few scopes that I could use but got a deal on an Athlon Argos BTR 6-24x50, FFP/mil ($270). I’ve been a SFP/MOA guy for 30-some years and also never had an illuminated reticle. Why not? Picked up a 30 mm scope mount from AP and it’s all set.

Finally got to the range yesterday. Factory bulk ammo, Hornady American Gunner 140 gr BTHP. Two shots to zero, then a 1.1MOA group with next three. Only two complaints on my setup: I had the scope a little too far forward and the zero stop had me at about 1.2 mils high (that three shot group was a holdover). The only complaint on the equipment was the trigger...

I fixed the scope mount and zero stop this morning and swapped the trigger for one of the LaRue MBT on sale for $99. They confirmed it’s good for the 308 platform. Two-stage, 2.5 lb on second is very nice. Just over 13 lbs empty, it’ll ring in at about 14 lbs with a loaded 10 round magazine.

Probably a $1500 project for something I didn’t really need, but Let’s Go Brandon!

More later once I try some reloads.

I have been looking at the athalon scopes.
How far were you shooting?

This was 100 yds... will fiddle around with some reloads and hope to take this and three other rifles south where I can shoot out to 600 soon.

My first Athlon was the Ares spotting scope. Love it - had it in WY, ID, NE and here over the past three seasons.

Probably have 6 of their rifle scopes now. I will say that the lower two tiers are pretty subpar. I picked up one (Neos?) for a 10/22... it works, but I wouldn't do anything more with it. Their mid and top tier stuff is solid, great reviews, and great customer service and warranty.

I haven't dipped my toe in the AR-10 pond as of yet,, thought about it, I've shot a couple of them, they're just so darn heavy ! if our lease gets clear cut before I give up hunting I'll probably build one, although I have an older hvy brl 700 in .308 that fills my needs in that area.

Dang, that is a heavy rifle! I’ll stick with my M-77 All Weather for .308, about half that weight.

I used an aero set and a ballistic advantage premium fluted barrel to build one a couple of years ago in .308 Shoots great. Killed a few deer and pigs with it. Yeah, it’s darn heavy. Just use it as a range toy now. May get a 14.5 inch barrel for it and pin a muzzle device to go with my suppressor and give that a try.

The one I built was with an aero upper and rail, ballistic advantage Hanson profile barrel, Magpul ctr stock and larue mbt trigger, it shot well but I couldn't stand having such a nice rifle that weighed more than my $300 cetme and I wanted a tavor in 5.56 more than a heavy 308 and they guy that bought it definitely wanted it more than I did.

Hey @Jester896 and @Dub , check out my youngest boy (6) hunting pappy’s soybeans that ain’t been picked yet. We blew it on two deer but not shots fired (best kind of loss)... that 1500 mini action is the way to go if you want light. Liberty can and 105 CBBs over 4198 has all the makings of a holiday party. I may drag the big boy out next Christmas. He’s a southpaw so gets to learn that way.

And I'm probably the only person on here looking at the soybeans wondering why they haven't been picked ?
