Think most GON’ers know Jo and I bought a farm a few years back.
I have really enjoyed cultivating the place and putting people on deer.
Yesterday, I just had “that sort of feeling”….
Put my 72 year old friend from Miami on a small field we have not hunted in a few years.
Now, get this… put my 70 year old brother in one of my archery stands on a long, thin green patch. He has my crossbow which he has NEVER shot. In fact he never shot any bow before.
I rush back to house to watch football.
Time passes and all is quiet. I tell Jo that both of them COULD a get a shot.
Crickets til 4:53. Chuck texts - just shot one.
At 4:54, Al texts - just shot one.
I calm Chuck down and tell him to sit tight.
Ask Al what is going on - he knows where his crashed. Asked him to also sit tight.
I let 40 mins go by and it is now semi dark.
Go to Chuck first and find arrow via the lumenock, buried in pine straw. No blood, a little hair and some scent on arrow. He is observant and knows exactly how deer reacted and the path it took. He walks 40 yards and BINGO - finds his first ever deer killed with a broadhead! Small doe but we don’t care!
We are laughing like kids - hooting and hollering.
Leave Chuck there to tag deer and collect his stuff.
Drive to Al - he is already tagged so we load it up and head back to Chuck.
Two trips later with small ATV and we - and the deer - are at the barn.
I am thankful for the harvest, for the friendships and for our place - but mostly I am thankful to God for the life he provides.
Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving!
