To spook or not to spook?

I agree most people overthink it. I try and run them off by making some odd circumstance, but I don't really sweat it. If there's a decent buck under, I wait him out. The rest I don't care about.

Me too kinda sorta. If they are close I'll wait them out. If I can climb down without getting seen I'll do that. The sound of the blades of the stand on the tree usually gets the job done.

Deer can see, hear, and smell in the dark.
Although true . A deers vision isn’t the greatest and only see blacks and whites. Depending on the moon light or lack there of. Most likely won’t know exactly what it is. Get down in the day light and see how fast they run. Darkness does side in being stealthy. Not always but a good bit of the time. I use to throw rocks at ‘‘em but got tired of carrying them.

Since I started using a walking stick several years ago I`ve found out that I can get a lot closer to deer as I`m slipping through the woods and swamp than I used to. I don`t know if they`re confused as to what they are seeing or what, but it has made a real difference in how close they allow me to get to them both day and night.

Probably helps break up the sound of a two footed human walking cadence

They can see plenty fine enough in the dark. Better than me anyways.

I really think its the foot noise. Just keeps em from gettin spooky quite as far off. Maybe the same thing applies with this day versus night behavior.

I know they can see some in the dark, how good I don`t know. I do know that I have heard them at night when running and sounding like they were tearing the woods up and running and crashing through everything.

The secret is not to run at night. Then you won`t run into trees, low hanging limbs, wait a minute briers, and beaver runs.

I firmly believe they see much better when its completely dark than when its transitioning to dusk and dawn. I know I've been busted in a blind when its completely dark and made minimal movements. I've gotten away with more movement when its completely light inside a blind. I know this from experience.

I also think deer like to get into fields and transition areas in the evenings for security as well. They will get away from field edges pretty quick. If you've ever hunted coyotes or anything else at night with thermals, you'd know deer can pick you up rather easily inside 100-120yds. Outside of that, I think they struggle at night. I'm amazed at how well they see in the full dark.

I will wait them out. If they are still hanging around when I get to where I can barely see a dark shape with binoculars I bark like a dog and they will ease off. Sometimes I have to do it twice for the more stubborn ones.
