Possibly getting into the cattle business

The 2nd pic is my current bull. Not the biggest, but always throws a 50 lb calf.

Mr. Pappy
if you buy a registered bull, or a bull from registered parents, you can get a copy of his EPDs.

They will tell you the history of that line of cattle. You will see numbers like -1.2 or +2.3 under the different columns.

What you want to see is one that has a negative number in the birth weight column, and a positive number in the weaning weight. The more broad these numbers the more likely the bull is to throw small calves that wean at a good weight.'

My bull now throws a mid 50's to 58 pound calf that weans off at better than 500 lbs.

another thing you want to do is look at the livestock market report for your area. You can see if steers or bulls bring more, and the ideal weight to sell them at for max profit.

Up here, bulls will bring 10 to 15 cents a pound more than a steer. So I figure why cut them when they bring more intact. Also, 450 lbs seems to be the sweet spot to sell. Much over 500, and you will lose money per head. If they get over 550, you are better off to keep them to 750.

A 450 lb calf is bringing 1.50 to 1.60 average here. A 550 will bring 1.20 to 1.30.

so a calf @ 450 will bring 700 to 750. A 550 will bring 650 to 700.

Why keep them and put weight on them to sell them for less?

Take the calves off mama as soon as profitable off the ***.The less you have to feed them the more you make.Hay and corn cost proffit.

With only 25 acres to work with I'd suggest becoming a grass farmer and do some backgrounding on weanlings.
With good grass and young stock bought right in the spring every pound of gain by fall is profit.
But my knowledge of current markets is not good. I grew up with sixty head of stock but ain't been around the market since dad and I loaded up the last thirteen head in 98.

I’ve been selling beef for a while now. If you’re interested in that route, let me know. I stay sold out. I’m not bragging by any means. But I’m farming small acreage like you will be. It might be a different story if I had 1000 acres
