Who is the only US Coast Guard member to earn the Medal of Honor? He was awarded the Medal posthumously after his actions in Sept. 1942 leading a group of Higgins boats to rescue a Marine Battalion trapped by a larger Japanese force. He was killed during the rescue.

This Marine was also in the 1st Division, 7th Marines, like Gunnery Sergeant Basilone. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for actions the day after Sgt. Basilone for essentially the same actions with the same weapons, .50 Caliber machine guns. They were awarded with the Medal on the same day standing next to one another. Difference was this guy accepted a promotion to become an officer when Basilone did not. This guy also served in Korea and retired as a Colonel. Who is he?

What pilot flew more missions than any pilot in WWII? Was credited with sinking a Japanese ship solely by strafing with machine guns. Had the pleasure of sitting next to or behind him at church most every Sunday for several years before he passed away in 2003. It was several years of knowing him before I learned his story and can remember sitting there in awe of this very humble and unassuming elderly man who had done so much more in his lifetime that most could ever hope to comprehend.
Not that it will help me but what did he fly? Was he a Georgia native?

Smart bomb
Smart bombs just meant it had a guidance system. Could alter course after dropped. The genius of that period was a kit that retrofitted iron bombs with fins and a guidance system.

Japan did the same thing for armor piercing artillery munitions for Pearl Harbor, just no guidance system unless it was bonsai
