Thinking About A New Truck

Yes I would recommend a Toyota Tacoma. I have a 2008 Tacoma base truck, 4 cyl, automatic, with 422,000 miles all original including the drivetrain. It still runs and rides great. View attachment 1216996
I have no idea if they still make a base truck or not, the car makers sure love to load up all vehicles with lots of stuff that I do not need. A good base model would be fine with the 4 cylinder engine but I don't need electric windows, electric seats, climate control, etc. I do need A/C and speed control and a good radio.

Are you wanting a small truck or would you rather have a full size?

If you’d rather have a full size, there are certain models you can get brand new for around 50k-53k out the door.

I bought a new(er) truck back in December, ended up with a used 2022 F-150 4x4 STX with 11,000 miles on it delivered to my front door for 47K total. This was after I couldn’t find anywhere to get me out the door on a new one for less than 50k total. The STX model is a base truck with a few upgrades, you could probably save even more by just buying a base XL model.

It has the 2.7 v6 turbo, and from my research is a great long lasting motor. When they delivered it, it was averaging 22 mpg.

Just some food for thought.

I had rather have a full size pickup but I am not paying 50k plus for any vehicle. And paying 47k for a used one even with low mileage no thanks, but to each his own.

I understand, I felt the same way. I wanted a full size truck and the only way to get one is to pay what they’re going for cause they ain’t going back down. I looked a tacomas and frontiers but I’d rather buy what I actually want and opposed to saving a little money and having something I had to settle for.

I bought a 1999 Tacoma that had 2 owners prior to me. Very clean. Had 211000 on it when I bought it and it now has 228000. Just a knock around truck. Put a timing belt on it and replaced a crack valve cover. Probably the best little truck I’ve ever owned. I told my wife when I die I want to be buried in because I ain’t never been in a hole I couldn’t get out of.

In my opinion you can’t go wrong with a Toyota . In 34 years of driving I’ve owned 3 trucks, all Toyota . I’ve got a 2014 Tacoma now that just rolled over 200 thousand , it may leave me stranded tomorrow but all I’ve done to it is normal maintenance and one battery and replaced froont brake pads once . I’ve put over 300 thousand on them all . My first one , 400 thousand rough miles. My first Toyota and my current one .8E9E94C2-7B30-474C-AFF2-83806E2A43E3.jpeg46EA3BCE-2EDC-44E0-878B-3C1AF9FF965D.jpeg

I came for the truck info, stayed for the sub plot of tacos. My F150 is currently in the shop and I'm considering a Toyota. Had one of their cars in college, and was really happy with it. Wife had two of their vehicles and no major issues.

On another note, read an article a few years back on best tacos in each state. El Rey de tacos on buford hwy just itp, was on the list for Georgia. I tried it when I was in the area for work and liked it. I also enjoy taco veloz. I get the carne asada or the chili relleno and lots of red and green sauce to add. I have to go in to eat because I make such a mess.

I Just picked up a 2004 Chevy Silverado 5.3l v8 Z71 crew cab 4x4 164xxx on it. Local sale 1 owner 4400.00. Paid cash. Had the a/c fixed, tune up and had a front end alignment. Just a chore truck. Gets all of 13 miles to the gallon.

Figure if it holds up for 3 years I will give it to my grandson. He can fix the rust

It’s disappointing my the manufacturers are having to force new technology to meet the ever diminishing return CAFE mpg mandates.
Amazes me that the dealers are going 4-6 cylinder turbos.
Yeah they are getting good HP numbers and performance.
But the MPG they are chasing are the same as the bigger V8 or V6 they are replacing.
I remember the regular 4 cyl cars of the 80-90 and they got 30-40mpg all day long. Before all the smog mess.
Engines need O2 not exhaust to run efferently.
I had a 86 escort, 1.9 I think, got 30+ around town and 40+ on the hwy. Wasnt fast but got great gas milage and was dependable. Had a Lebaron with the 3.0 V6 that got in the upper 20s around town and low 30s on the hwy.

Now a full size truck with a turbo or dual turbo V6 gets the same MPG or less than a NA V8. What's the point? Yeah maybe more power but 300HP is enough.
Especially if it all about CAFE, and there is no improvement.

I will say I have not driven any of these new little turbo cars or trucks. I do remember the turbos of the 80s and early 90s were a lot of fun though. Once you got them spooled up.

I’ve toyed with the idea of finding a similar truck and spending the money to recondition it.
I would be in for much less than new and finding parts for an older Chevy is no problem.
And I could claim I’m driving a classic.

94 Toyota on my 5th motor average around 150,000 miles on 22re. Everything else been great. Timing chain gets lose rubs hole in cover water in oil rest is history. Would I buy another sure would and when this new motor goes out will get another one.

And how many on this site would consider the Toyota Tacoma? I might be in the market soon for a new pickup. It won't be one of the 60K or above Fords or Chevy's for sure. The Tacoma is just shy of 40k still high but not 60k.. I have heard good things about the Tacoma, and some not so good things as well. Your opinion?
I haven’t had a chance to read through the entire thread, and not sure if you’ve bought yet but just wanted you to be aware that an all new Tacoma is coming this year. So you’ll have to decide if you want to buy a 3rd gen or 4th gen. Supposed to be announced this week or next actually from what I’ve read.

All around the world developing nations have access to low cost, rugged trucks. For instance, Tata motors makes a midsize 4x4 that can be had for about 10k. Its akin to a stripped down Toyota Hilux with a 4 cylinder diesel engine.

tata-xenon.jpg

I have ridden in one several times. The only reason you cannot get it here is because US and Asian manufacturers do not want you to buy 15k trucks. They want you to buy 60 trucks.
